In Uganda, 56% of the population is under the age of 18, and well over half of children experience deprivation and stress from poverty, hunger and violence. In fact, children are the nation’s largest demographic group living in poverty, according to the Consortium for Street Children. The situation is exacerbated because Uganda also hosts one of the world’s largest refugee populations, as the nation has become a haven from conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. In cities like Kampala, thousands of street children strive to help support their families by working on the streets instead of going to school.
The Serve a Smile Foundation provides food, clothes, counseling and guidance to street children in Kampala. Some of these children were either abandoned or ran away from home due to child abuse. In addition to offering them some of the necessities of daily living, we show them that their lives have value, that they deserve to be loved and cared for, and that they can have a future beyond living on the streets.
Serve a Smile Foundation has been serving street children in Central Kampala, along Bombo Road, since August 16, 2022. Working with Lutaaya Shaban, Uncle Frank and Uncle Nath, residents who already had established a local outreach to the children of this area, we visit with the children twice a month. We bring the children clothes and food and spend time with them offering counseling and guidance. Since the founders of Serve a Smile Foundation came from a similar level of poverty and deprivation, we encourage them by our example, and show them that it is possible to overcome their situation. So far we have served 45 children in this way. But we must do more.
If these children are to have a real chance at leading healthy and productive lives, they need shelter and an education, neither of which they currently have. That’s why our goal is to build a home for both boys and girls living on the streets of Kampala, where they can receive an education and even potentially find adoptive families.
With $350,000, we could purchase and maintain a home for 60 children (30 boys and 30 girls) and sponsor their education. Central Kampala is the area we want to serve most, as it is one of the places with the greatest need. By providing these children with food, shelter, guidance and an education, we would be giving them a shot at a bright future. We firmly believe, based on our own experience, that it is possible to lift these children out of poverty.
